It’s a New World Order Folks!
So if you’d been following the crew at Perth Style on insta last week you would have seen we got our art-on at the ever so cool Venn Gallery in Queen Street. When our email inbox was graced with an invitation to opening night, we were intrigued enough with the concept of “New World Order” that the beautiful Jordana (PS Editor) and I thought we’d make a night of it.
So here we are, I’m your PS contributor today and I’m going to give you a run down on what it was all about and how the evening played out.
“NWO” is a group exhibition featuring new works by artists, Tom Muller (Perth), Yarra Vega (New York) and Augustyn Schwarzwald (Berlin). While art is open to interpretation and for me, whether I would hang it in your living room or not… the exhibition itself examines the globalization phenomenon and subtle boundaries between reality and fiction.
I arrived at 6pm on the dot which is very unlike me, while very like Jordana… she was held up in a Perth Style meeting. After making my way upstairs I had the shock of the night to find a young guy sitting down on the floorboards smashing up limestone blocks with a hammer. I later found out this was in fact planned, it was Augustyn Schwarzwald’s live work, Rare Earths, The Mineralist 2013, performed by Californian musician and producer Jonathan Gaboury… Totally weird none the less but that is the greatest thing about art and fashion alike… not everyone is going to love it. Schwarzwald’s other works I should note were much more traditional pieces, ink on cotton mounted on aluminum and YES, I would hang them in my living room.
I helped myself to a complimentary beverage and thought I’d get a head start on the art while waiting on the partner in crime. The guest opening speaker took to the floor as Jordana snuck up the stairs (nobody noticed hun, promise!) we took the chance to ogle the other guests fashion choices while given an insight to the exhibition and bringing together three such diverse artists.
Vega and Schwarzwald were not present on the night however Tom Muller did his best to speak with eager patrons as everyone soaked up the atmosphere. I know you shouldn’t have favorites but I did love Tom’s work Realm of the Neon 2013, a glass tank LED lit with multiple neon tetra fish! Yes, fish I say!!
Later we made our way downstairs and had a drink at Venn Bar and even had a chance for some retail therapy at Venn Shop (the crew behind Venn are probably thankful they never made a Venn Fashion as we’d both never leave).
We finished up the night at Andaluz for some amazing tapas and somehow even snuck in one final cocktail at Helvetica. It was a very Perth night out and nobody wanted to go home… If you do get a chance, try visit the crew at Venn as “NOW” is only running until the 4th of October.
